Sketchbook, being a general label for whatever art I make while I’m just playing around. When I get a job, the clock starts and I’m under pressure to try to make the best possible work I can. Drawing and redrawing the pice until I get it to a point where the client and I are satisfied. The hard part is, If I just try to make “good, finished work” all the time, my creativity starts to shrivel up. Sketchbooks are a sacred place for exploration and experimentation. A place where I try to absorb and understand the world around me, with whatever media I feel inspired by at the moment. If I can’t draw something, I’ll try and try again, holding my pencil in different ways, sometimes jerkily moving from point to point, willing my brain to see and my hand to develop muscle memory. It’s not always pretty, it’s very personal and it’s how I expand my imagination and celebrate the things that inspire me. I could just share the most polished pages from my sketchbook, but that would be a dishonest representation of my process. My sketchbook is a place where I can be messy, have fun and be free from the pressures of expectation. Here you can see my struggles to connect the dots from reality to imagination. Enjoy!
